Crowfoot

Crowfoot ( Blackfoot actually Isapo - Muxika or Issapóómahksika, " Big crow's foot ", * 1830, † April 25, 1890 ) was a tribal chief of the Blackfoot Indians ( Siksika ) in Canada.

Life

Although Crowfoot was a warrior, but also keen to establish peace between the various tribes. When the Canadian Pacific Railway decided to build their main connecting line through the territory of the Blackfoot, confident negotiations with Albert Lacombe Crowfoot to allow this. The President of the Railway Company, William Van Horne, a life- long valid ticket gave him for that on the lines of the CPR.

1877 forced the government, represented by Colonel James Macleod and Lieutenant Governor David Laird, Crowfoot and other chiefs of the Blackfoot to the signing of a contract by which the tribes ceded land. In return, they received annual payments and reserves.

Despite its generally accepted bravery Crowfoot refused in 1885 on the Northwest Rebellion participate because he thought it was a lost cause. He died in 1890 of tuberculosis. The Crowfoot Trail, a major road in Calgary, is named after him.
