Cruas

Cruas is a commune with 2806 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ardèche and Rhône- Alpes.

Geography

The village lies in the valley of the Rhône on the right side of the Rhône at an old Roman road, now Route National ( RN ) 86 between Valence (40 km away) and Montelimar (about 15 km).

History

Cruas goes back to a Benedictine monastery founded in the year 804 with a fortified church on a valley of the Rhône projecting ledge. A lying below the old monastery Romanesque church from the 11th century is known for its exceptionally rich bestiary in its crypt. In the apse of the church there is a held in the Byzantine style mosaic, which commemorates the visit of Pope Urban II in 1095. The church as well as most other historic buildings of the town are built from the limestone gained in local quarries. From these quarries the stones come for historic buildings and castles in the area of Cruas, these quarries is also the cement industry back in Cruas.

Economy

Cruas is industrially dominated by a for Lafarge group belonging cement plant and the 1977 projected and 1985 previous to the power supply nuclear power plant (Centre Nucléaire de Production d' Electricité / CNPE ) EDF ( Electricité de France ) with four pressurized water reactors with a rated capacity of 919 megawatts ( MW).
