Cruiser (motorcycle)

Cruiser is since the 1990s, the term for a category Motorcycles, whose design features are attributable to U.S. production machines ( Harley- Davidson, Indian, Henderson ) as they were built starting around the 1930s. Style -forming characteristics are long wheelbase, wide tires, large volume motor, large fenders, wide handlebars and relatively far forward mounted footboards and resulting upright sitting position (from 1949 ) Telegabel panels and typical touring accessories such as windshield, saddlebags, additional lights and crash bar. By conversion of such series machines emerged from about 1948, the first so-called chopper.

Motorized Cruiser are typically equipped with a large-volume, long-stroke V-2 engine, which is characterized by a high torque at low engine speed range. Due to this characteristic, motor cruisers are well suited for quiet yet powerful cruising.

Motorized exceptions of the V2 rule are eg:

  • BMW 2- cylinder boxer engine
  • Honda: 6- cylinder boxer engine
  • Boss Hoss: 8- cylinder V- engine
  • Triumph: 2 - and 3- cylinder in-line engine

In Cruiser style both light motorcycles with 125 cc (eg Honda VT125 Shadow ) and large-displacement machines to 2,300 cc ( Triumph Rocket III) are offered.
