Cruzan Rum

Cruzan Rum is still produced since 1760 in the eighth generation of the family Nelthropp partly by hand. The name comes from the Cruzan ( original ) inhabitants of the island of St. Croix, called Crucians.

Originally produced in normal stills, the rum is nowadays due to the higher purity in special stills, so-called coloumn stills, distilled. Cruzan uses five coloumn stills and used tires for only the middle part to keep all possible fusel oils and impurities from the final product. Cruzan Rum is made exclusively from molasses, which is, however, due to the no longer sufficient sugar cane plantations on St. Croix now imported. The molasses is mixed with rainwater and yeast and, after a short fermentation with an alcohol content of about 10 % for distillation.

The rum is aged in once used bourbon barrels made of American oak.

After the maturity of the rum is reduced to 40% and bottled drinking strength.

Cruzan was the first distillery, which marketed flavored rum.
