Cruzeiro Esporte Clube

Cruzeiro Esporte Clube is a sport club from Belo Horizonte, the capital of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. He has become mainly known for its football team.

Cruzeiro is, among other things two times Copa Libertadores champion, Brazilian football champions of 1966, 2003 and 2013, multiple cup winner. He is also one of only three clubs in Brazil, who have played nationally always first class.

In addition to football, the association operates departments for athletics and bocce. More sports still were supported in earlier days, including entertained the club once a professional volleyball team. History

The club was founded on January 2, 1921 under the name Società Sportiva Palestra Itália as a sports club for the Italian immigrants of Belo Horizonte. The term Palestra (from Greek palaistra παλαίστρα, Ringer school ') describes in the Italian language a gym. The first club colors were the colors of the Italian flag: green, red and white. The team played in accordance with green jerseys, white shorts and red socks. In 1925 the membership was opened for non - Italian descent people and the club renamed Sociedade Sportiva Palestra Itália.

Because of Brazil's entry into the war in January 1942, the use of terms of enemy nations was banned, and the club had to change his name. From 30 January, the club renamed itself originally Palestra Mineiro. The first week of October, the club changed its name shortly as Ypiranga before the members finally agreed on Cruzeiro Esporte Clube ( " Sports club Cruzeiro " ) agreed. With four hits in five final appearances in the Brazilian Cup, the Copa do Brasil, between 1993 and 2003 Cruzeiro together with Gremio FB Porto Alegrense record winner in this competition since its introduction in its present form in 1989.
