Petals absent in Crypteronia, are present in the other genera. It's mostly just a circle with four or five, rarely six free fertile stamens present; Axinandra in two circles, each with five free, fertile stamens are present. The anthers are small. The two to five carpels are fused into one above or inferior ovary. In each flower only a stylus is available with a mostly capitate stigma.

System

The Crypteroniaceae family in 1868 by Alphonse de Candolle in Pyrame Louis Pierre Augustin Pyramus de Candolle Alphonse Louis Pierre & Pyrame de Candolle: placed Prodromus systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis, 16 (2 ), pp. 677. Type genus is Crypteronia flower.

Crypteroniaceae are related within the order of Myrtales closest to the families of Penaeaceae from southern Africa and Alzateaceae from the Neotropics. It is believed that their common ancestor was located in the Cretaceous Period in western Gondwana. The Crypteroniaceae drifted to the Indian subcontinent northwards after the breakup of the supercontinent. Even before the collision with Asia the three genera were originated and subsequently spread to the current area: Southeast Asia, the Malay Archipelago and Sri Lanka.

The Crypteroniaceae family contains three genera with about ten species:

  • Axinandra Thwaites: With four ways: Axinandra zeylanica Thwaites: It is endemic in Sri Lanka.
  • Axinandra coriacea Baill. , Axinandra borneensis Bakh. f and another type are located on Borneo and the Malay Peninsula.
  • Crypteronia griffithii C.B.Clarke
  • Crypteronia paniculata flower
  • Dactylocladus stenostachys Oliv. It is native to the lowland swamp forests of Borneo. The wood is utilized.
