CSAV

The Compañía Sud Americana de Vapores ( CSAV ) is a Chilean shipping company. It is the largest Latin American shipping line and number 20 worldwide. CSAV has existed since 1872 and is a Chilean traditional company.

History

The CSAV was founded in 1872 and is therefore one of the oldest still existing worldwide shipping companies. The company began with the coastal whose services have rapidly expanded to a growing route network along the South American west coast to the under construction nascent Panama Canal. In later years, the cruise line first advanced their lines to the ports of the United States, followed by Europe, Asia and South America East Coast.

In April 2011, the Chilean Quiñenco holding involved in the CSAV. Quiñenco today holds about 46 % of CSAV shares. Quiñenco is a subsidiary of Grupo Luksic the Luksic family, and employs approximately 33,000 employees.

Today

Today the company operates cargo services with a focus on the transport of refrigerated and frozen food as well as bulk cargo and vehicle transport services. Today's route network linking the ports of the South American Atlantic and Pacific coasts with all major parts of the world. The instruments used are owned and chartered container vessels, reefers, bulk carriers and car carriers. In addition, the CSAV offers intermodal transport and other transport services. A door - to-door service was up in 2012 by the company's subsidiary Sudamericana Agencias Aéreas y Marítimas ( SAAM ) entertained, of which CSAV meantime, however, separated them. In January 2014, CSAV led merger talks with the German shipping company Hapag -Lloyd. On January 22, 2014 the two companies signed a non- binding memorandum of understanding that sets the framework for the unification of the CSAV container business with the activities of HL. CSAVs piece, liquid and refrigerated goods, as well as vehicle transport are excluded from the proposed transaction. The new company would be the world's fourth largest container shipping company with a total transport capacity of nearly 1 million TEUs, a cargo volume of approximately 7.5 million TEUs per year and a total turnover of nearly U.S. $ 12 billion per year.
