Ctenosaura

Common Black Iguana ( Ctenosaura similis ), a male and two female specimens

The Black iguanas ( Ctenosaura ) are a genus of medium to small lizards belonging to the family of iguanas.

Occurrence and habitat

Black iguanas are common across Central America.

Some of them are arboreal, sometimes they also inhabit treeless landscapes. They usually live in arid ( dry ) habitats. One for the group rather atypical, but all the more remarkable life has trained the Utila Iguana. He lives in the salty wet Mangrove a small Caribbean island and uses the dry areas near sandy beaches to lay their eggs during the breeding season.
