Cuarnens

Cuarnens is a municipality in the district of Morges in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Cuarnens is located on 620 m above sea level. M., 13 km (airline ) north of the regional capital Morges. The scattered village extends to the foot of the Jura plateau, both sides of the upper Venoge, in the Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​7.2 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Jura plateau. The area is crossed from the southwest to the northeast of the Venoge, which has created a slightly deepened in the plateau Talniederung over the course of millions of years. The whole south and east is occupied by the extensive plateau. To the northwest, the communal land over the little valley of the Morvaz extends to the lower Jura south slope, at the 750 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Cuarnens is achieved. Population

With 385 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Cuarnens one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 85.6 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking and 10.1 % 1.8 % portugiesischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of Cuarnens amounted in 1850 to 414 residents in 1900 to 481 inhabitants. After the population had decreased to 1970 to 275 people, a significant population increase was observed again since then.

Economy

Cuarnens was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the crop and livestock farming have some significance in the occupational structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. Along the Venoge there are several saw mills. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in Cossonay and in the Lausanne area.

Traffic

The community is conveniently technically quite well developed. It lies on the main road from Cossonay over the Col du Mollendruz in the Vallée de Joux. By Postbus course, which runs from Cossonay to L' Isle, the village is connected to the public transport network. Another bus line connects L' Isle via Cuarnens with La Sarraz.

History

The municipal area of Cuarnens remains were discovered of settlements from the Roman period. A Roman villa existed from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. Even a Roman military camp was located near the present village. Furthermore, a likely derived from the Burgundian burial ground was found.

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1001 under the name Quarningis. Later, the names Quarnens ( 1049 ), Villa Quarnensis ( 1095 ) and Guarnens appeared in the 12th century. The name is due to the persons name Warni and means for the people of Warni.

In Cuarnens the Norbertine abbey of Lac de Joux (L' Abbaye ) had in the Middle Ages rich land. It maintained since 1141 a mill on the Venoge. Also the monastery Romainmôtier and the Dominican monastery of Lausanne possessed fundamental rights here. The village was ruled by La Sarraz before 1583 its own little rule was that several times changed hands.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Cuarnens came under the administration of the Bailiwick Romainmôtier. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the District Cossonay.

Attractions

At the site of a house of worship mentioned already in 1001 the Protestant parish church Saint -Didier was rebuilt from 1733 to 1737. The La Grange castle from the 17th century was largely demolished in 1928, today the main facade of 1637 is still preserved. In the old town there are some characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
