Cuautla is with 145 482 inhabitants ( 2005), the third-largest and second most important city in the Mexican state of Morelos, located almost in the geographical center. History

The name comes from the Nahuatl Cuautla language and means " land of the eagle " (from cuauhtli = eagle and tlan = land, soil ). Before the Cuautla region was conquered in 1521 by the Spanish, the area was first settled by the Olmecs and later by the Aztecs.

Between February 19 and May 2, 1812 one of the fiercest battles of the Mexican War of Independence took place in Cuautla. In this period the city was defended by the troops of the priest and Generals José María Morelos y Pavón against the Spanish troops.
