Geography

Cuba is located at an altitude of 187 m between olive groves on the western banks of a tributary of the Ribeira de Odivelas. The town is situated 18 km north of the district capital of Beja.

History

Antas and other finds indicate human occupation in Cuba since about 3000 BC, found from the Roman period buildings such as bridges, dams, Villa rusticas inter alia, indicate a certain importance of the site in the province of Lusitania. From Moorish times there are no significant findings, which is explained by the destructive battles during the Reconquista.

Conquered by Dom Sancho II of the Arab Moors, the town of Cuba was named because many " Cubas " ( vessels for storing wine ) were found or, according to another opinion, the name Cuba has an even older origin and is derived from the name " Coba ", an Arabic diminutive, means the tower. Officially mentioned for the first time in the modern kingdom of Portugal was the place in the 13th century. Since 1782 Cuba is an independent circuit.

On 10 January 2008, Manoel de Oliveira's film veteran Christopher Columbus - The Enigma in Cuba its commercial premiere. The film delves into using numerous historical evidence to the theory that Columbus was born as the illegitimate offspring of the Portuguese royal family in Cuba and grew up there. Even so this was named the largest island he discovered after his hometown.
