Cubulco is an approximately 21,000 inhabitants town in Guatemala. Cubulco lies in the west of the department of Baja Verapaz, and is the administrative seat of the greater community ( municipality ), which extends to 444 km ² and 42,000 inhabitants.

Location and climate

Cubulco lies about 15 km west of Rabinal on a very secluded plateau in the west of Baja Verapaz in the northwestern foothills of the Sierra de Chuacús. The sparsely populated and relatively dry municipality is geographically the largest of the department. 6 km north of the town begins the Chixoy reservoir.

The municipality is bordered to the east by Rabinal, to the southeast by Granados and the west and north by the department of Quiché.

Economy and Tourism

Cubulco lives mainly from agriculture. On July 25th of each year in Cubulco find larger celebrations in honor of the patron saint instead. In addition to the folk dances of the so-called palo is particularly known volador. It is a traditional performance, to condescend to the men on a rope circling of a 20 m high trunk. At this event, there are always fatal accidents.

You can reach Cubulco from Guatemala City usually on the Atlantic Highway CA 9 and the National Highway 17 via Salamá and Rabinal. The leading of Rabinal about Santa Cruz El Chol and Granados to Guatemala City National Road 5 is extremely curvy and recommended only in the dry season (October to May).
