The National Park Cuc Phương ( Vietnamese Quốc gia Vuon Phương CUC ) is located about 100 kilometers south of Hanoi in Ninh Binh province, Vietnam.

Location and species richness

The sixth largest with 22,200 acres of national park in the country is located approximately 56 kilometers (direct distance) north of the provincial city of Ninh Binh, 46 km from the N1 away in mountainous terrain, which is part of the " Dry Halong Bay " is. Its topography is shaped mainly by limestone cliffs, the highest being May Bac, the ( "Silver Cloud " ) with a height of 656 m and the alluvial land of the Red River ( Song Hong ). It corresponds in its geological formation to the same processes in the tropical karst as the Halong Bay in Hanoi and in Khao Sok in Thailand. Tropical rain forest is the dominant vegetation type. The park was opened in 1962 as the first national park in Vietnam.

The National Park Cuc Phương has a large biodiversity. The park is home to 89 mammal species, 110 species of reptiles, 65 fish and 320 species of birds. With about 450 larger animal species around 38 percent of the national fauna are represented. There are also a variety of insect world with about 1800 species, of which the millions of butterflies are particularly evident in the spring. In early March, the butterfly season starts slowly, which expires in early May. During this time, the air is so fulfilled that even cycling without glasses is impossible. Again, an estimated 2,000 plant species are represented, of which 37 are on the Red List of Vietnam.

Illegal logging and poaching are among the biggest problems of park management that tries to counteract these grievances with targeted programs. In addition to the illegal animal trade - especially the rare, nocturnal Loris ( primates) are due to their cute appearance popular destination - the biggest problem is the fragmentation and destruction of habitats, as well as the domestic so-called ecotourism. The Vietnamese version has nothing to do with the usual Western notions of an environmentally safe, low-impact tourism. It exerted an enormous pressure on the national parks to develop these for entertainment purposes ( " Terrain Park "). It is in the context of Nadler project, the local Muong, still represented with two small villages in the park ( by the authorities in 1989 many settlers moved to the edge of the park forcibly ), villagers and school groups from the area, as well as Vietnamese tourists through the to lead enclosure to operate educational work on the much-needed conservation and environmental protection. Another problem is the traditional medicine, both the local and the Chinese, dar.

Conservation breeding in the National Park

Three Rescue Center currently exist in the Cuc Phuong Nationapark.

Endangered Primate Rescue Center

At the entrance is the Endangered Primate Rescue Center, which is led by Tilo Nadler biologists. Currently, 126 animals from 15 species, including six species that are kept here only hosts. There is an endemic species of Cat Ba, whose population is 60 copies, of which only two animals live only here that exist in the world in captivity: the rarest kind, Goldkopflangur or colloquially Cat Ba Langur ( Trachypitheus poliocephalus ) with its typical punkerähnlichen hair. Furthermore, you will encounter black -leg, gray -leg and Rotschenklige dresses monkeys ( Pygathrix nigripes, P. cinerea, P. nemaeus ). After their seizure they are first held for 6 weeks in a quarantine station, wormed and various tests such as herpes, hepatitis, tuberculosis, etc. subjected. The animals depends on accurate knowledge of the menu. To this end, the keepers have up to 159 sheets of 53 different plant species and more than 30 root locations for the langurs ready.

In 1991 Tilo Nadler, to make a film about the National Park and discovered information about the 1930 and collect up to 1987 for extinct believed endemic Delacour Schwarzlanguren. Since that time, the biologist from Germany is committed to the keeping and breeding of native species of monkeys and founded in 1993 with the first poached and confiscated Delacour - langurs so far the only entertainment and breeding project for endangered primates in Indochina. Nadler and colleagues in 2011 described a new marten, the Cuc Phuong sunroof, known previously only from the national park Cuc Phương.

The long term goal of the center is the reintroduction of primates and repopulation of the original habitats. For this purpose, a 2 -acre outdoor enclosure with electric fence was created to move in a thinned primary forest on the langurs. On the new 4 -acre site is home to three species to another.

Carnivore & Pangolin Conservation Program

The Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program ( CPCP ) mt addresses the conservation of small carnivore species ( civet cats, Linsangs, wild cats, otters and weasels ) and pangolins in Vietnam. In 1995, the program was established, but initially only for study purposes at the spot scooter, a highly endangered civet. Gradually, the program grew and expanded the work area for all living in Vietnam small predator species. 2006: Beginning of the CPCP work with the two occurring in Vietnam pangolin species, the Malayan pangolin and the Chinese pangolin. All these species are seriously threatened by the illegal wildlife trade and apply throughout South East Asia as " critically endangered ". The CPCP is working for the conservation of this endangered species in various ways: through educational work with the local population as well as a special training program for rangers to be aware of the subject species conservation. Furthermore, the CPCP analyzed by field studies of species richness of areas and explored for re- evacuation of seized animals safe zones. In Cuc Phuong National Park Centre in this work is coordinated and planned. Three other important components of the center are the only breeding program for spot scooter in Southeast Asia, the rescue and rehabilitation of confiscated animals, and research projects on the behavior and attitude of living in the center animals.

Turtle Conservation Center

Similar to primates in the National Park and Conservation breeding for other species be carried out. They are bred for example, endemic to Vietnam Annam terrapins in the National Park, which are highly threatened.

Tourism

From Hanoi tours can be booked to the park, where there is a forest located in the hotel for overnight. Rangers offer guided day and night tours along various trails.
