The Stachelbürzler ( Campephagidae ) are a diverse family in the order of perching birds ( Passeriformes ). In this family there are six genera and about 80 species.

The name derives from Stachelbürzler the peculiar formation of the plumage from the back of the back and rump. In the genus Mennigvögel this formation is missing. The shafts of erectile feathers are strongly pointed out to the tip which makes them appear like a thorn. Because you can remove the springs from the skin easily, it is suspected that these are used for defense against predators.

Stachelbürzler are usually on the top of nondescript gray colored on light brown to black. They are similar in plumage color and in their physique the shrikes and the cuckoos, but are not related to them. The Mennigvögel have a more colorful plumage. In the males outweighs black, red, orange and yellow, the females are colored matt.

The distribution area is located in the subtropical and tropical forests in Africa, Asia and Australasia. The medium sized, sociable Stachelbürzler are site- faithful birds that roam only in a limited area. One exception is the Graumennigvogel which penetrates into areas as migratory birds in Japan and Siberia. The cup-shaped nests are created in forked branches on the trees. The scrim include between two to five speckled eggs that are colored differently depending on the type, white on bluish to greenish.

As a dietary caterpillars are destroyed preferred which are picked from the leaves. Some species catch insects in flight.
