Cuddalore district

The district Cuddalore (Tamil: கடலூர் மாவட்டம் ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Administrative center of the district is the eponymous town of Cuddalore.

Geography

The Cuddalore district lies to the east of Tamil Nadu on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. Neighboring districts are in the south of Nagapattinam, Ariyalur and Perambalur in the West, Viluppuram in the north and the district of the same name Puducherry Union territory in the northeast.

The area of the district of Cuddalore is 3,705 square kilometers. The area belongs to the flat coastal plain of Tamil Nadu. The northern part of the district is the River Ponnaiyar which opens at Cuddalore in the Bay of Bengal, flow-through, in the south of Vellar flows.

The Cuddalore district is divided into seven taluks of Cuddalore, Panruti, Kurinjipadi, Chidambaram, Kattumannarkoil, Virudhachalam and Tittakudi.

History

The Cuddalore district goes back to the South Arcot district. This, the British had founded after 1801 adopted the rule of the Nawabs of Arcot and had the area incorporated into the province of Madras. Administrative headquarters of the district was Cuddalore. After Indian independence, the district South Arcot came in 1956 to the newly formed State of Madras (now Tamil Nadu ). In 1993, the South Arcot District was divided into the districts of Cuddalore and Viluppuram.

Population

According to the Indian census of 2011, the Cuddalore district has 2.60088 million inhabitants. Compared to the last census in 2001 the population had grown by 13.8 percent. The population density is 702 inhabitants per square kilometer, well above the average of Tamil Nadu ( 555 inhabitants per square kilometer). The degree of urbanization, however, is below average at 33.9 percent. The literacy rate is 79.0 percent, which corresponds to the mean of the state.

The population of the district make Hindus according to the 2001 census 92.1 percent of the vast majority. There are also minorities of Muslims ( 4.5 per cent ) and Christians (3.2 percent).

Attractions

For Chidambaram Cuddalore district of the city, approximately 40 kilometers south of Cuddalore belongs located. According to the myth the god Shiva is said to have performed his cosmic dance here as Nataraja ( "King of Dance" ). Therefore, Chidambaram is one of the holiest places of Hinduism and an important pilgrimage center. The Nataraja temple of Chidambaram goes to the Chola period ( 9th to 13th century) and extended during the following centuries. He is one of the most important examples of the Dravidian Tempelbauarchitektur.

An important Vishnu temple is located in the city Srimushnam. Of tourist interest are also the mangrove forests of Pichavaram.
