Cuges-les-Pins

Cuges -les-Pins is a commune with 4898 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bouches -du -Rhône in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

The community is located between the twelve kilometer journey Aubagne and the eighteen kilometers away Le Bandol. It belongs to the Communauté d' Aubagne et de Pays d' agglomà l' Étoile.

History

To 25000 BC formed near the modern village a lake. Its size varied: eight thousand years ago, the lake had an area of ​​approximately 60 hectares, while even were four square miles 3000 years later. In the Middle and New Stone Age, some families settled on the lake. During the Copper Age people settled in caves in the nearby mountains. The discovery of pipes, tiles and other found objects testifies to the occupation of the area by the Romans. The age of migration was very unstable and dangerous. Therefore gathered some families and settled at Pic du Cuget. In the eleventh century was built on a hill, the Castrum de Cuget. Thereupon the inhabitants settled at the foot of the castle and were thus also subjects of the lords. From 1165 was the site of the Count of Marseille, who were also barons of Aubagne at the same time, depending. 1220 was the castle - and with it the place - resold to Marseilles merchant Guillaume Vivaud, whose family until 1435 the owner was. Then the place to Barthélémy de Basqui was sold and sold again in 1448 to Antoine de Glandèves. His family then remained until the French Revolution owner of Cuges -les-Pins. The last mistress, who inherited the place in 1772, was very conservative and rejected the ideas of the Revolution from all around. In the summer of 1792, the castle was finally stormed. Here, about three tons of wheat, two tons of capers and more than a thousand hectoliters of wine were looted. But the lady did not give up and ordered the return of the stolen goods. When the citizens learned of the decree on January 8, 1793, they stormed the castle. The guards did not attempt to oppose them. The lady, however, was already fled. On the same day a castle tower was destroyed by fire. Apparently this had been randomly caused by uncontrolled fire. As in 1793, the city of Toulon was besieged by Napoleon, the residents of Cuges -les-Pins had to deliver food and equipment. The castle was built in 1794 and 1795 turned into a military hospital. Died here in this time 173 soldiers. 1794 married in Cuges -les-Pins Joseph Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, and Julie Clary.
