Çukurca

Çukurca ( Kurdish: Cele ) is a town and a district of the Turkish province of Hakkari in southeastern Turkey. The town has 8247 inhabitants and the county a total of 15,294 inhabitants ( 2012). Çukurca is located in the west of the province, bordering Iraq. In the west, the province of Şırnak is Çukurcas. Çukurca is a district since 1953.

The original name of Çukurca was Çal.

History

On the morning of October 19, 2011 the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK ) were killed in a raid in the course of the Turkey - PKK conflict on a Turkish military post in Çukurca at the border with Iraq 24 soldiers killed and 18 were wounded. The attack was the largest loss for the Turkish army since 1993. As a direct response, invaded Turkish commando units in battalion strength in the northern Iraq.
