Culzean Castle

Culzean Castle ( [ kʌleɪn ] from Middle English " cul - Ȝ - ean " (see: Ȝ ) ) is a castle near Maybole in the former district of Carrick on the coast of South Ayrshire. It was designed in the 18th century by Robert Adam for David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassillis, like a romantic castle. It stands on a steep cliff overlooking the sea, surrounded by a two acre park with Swan Lake, adventure playground and forest roads.

Also noteworthy is the gas system, with up to 1940 Town gas from coal for lighting and heating was generated. Today a permanent exhibition of William Murdock is set up.

In 1945, the Castle of the Kennedys to the National Trust for Scotland ( NTS) was passed, which it is marketed today and maintains. In recognition of the merits during the Second World War for the liberation of Britain the general and later president Dwight D. Eisenhower was previously provided by the Kennedys to the top floor to life time. Also about him is an exhibition at the Castle to find.

Meanwhile, it has emerged as one of the most visited tourist attraction in the area around Ayr and attracts thousands of visitors.
