Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad

The Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad, known as a C & P, was an American "Class III " railway company in Western Maryland. As coal train designed it was operated by the Consolidation Coal Company until it was taken over in 1953 by the Western Maryland Railway.

The route ran from Cumberland, Maryland to Piedmont, West Virginia. At both ends of it was connected with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The operations building and offices were located in Mount Savage. On the way to Piedmont the track also reached Frostburg, where the station building the C & P is the western terminus of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad today.

The early establishment of the company data also reflect the importance of Mount Savage resist as an early production facility for rails and locomotives. So already the first rails were delivered in 1844 and opened in 1866 James Millholland the locomotive factories who built at least 30 machines for the C & P and a number of standard and narrow gauge locomotives for other companies 1868-1917.

In addition to the station building in Frostburg many buildings in Mt Savage, we still have some distance further north parts of Piedmont are still used by CSX Transportation.
