Cumberland County (Illinois)

The Cumberland County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 11,048 inhabitants and a population density of 12.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Toledo. In Cumberland County, there are three public libraries and three daily newspapers published.

Geography

The County is located in the central south-east of Illinois and is drained by the Embarras River. It has an area of 899 km ², of which 3 km ² water surface. At the Cumberland County border Nachbarcountys following:

History

The Cumberland County was formed on March 2, 1843 from the southern part of the Coles County. The County was named after the Cumberland Road, which connected then the Potomac River with the Mississippi River.

The ever further breakdown of the original counties, the area of the current County from 1809 to 1812 belonged to the St. Clair County, Madison County 1812-1814, 1814-1817 to Edwards County, from 1817 to 1819 for Crawford County and from 1819 to 1830 for Clark County, resulting in the 1830 Coles County was formed.

On November 5, 1885, the administration building burned down completely, with all books, records and documents were destroyed.
