Cumberland River

It rises in eastern Kentucky near the border with Virginia in the western foothills of the Appalachians. Its source is located some north-east of the city of Cumberland. From there, the Cumberland River runs westward through Kentucky and northern parts of Tennessee, Kentucky and reached again opens at the border of Illinois at Smithland in the Ohio River.

About half of the river, the water rushes through the Cumberland Falls and three large reservoirs ( including the Cadiz Lake ) flows, was made navigable.

During the American Civil War several battles were conducted near the Cumberland River - including the Battle of Fort Donelson.
