Cummington is a town in Hampshire County in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. 1824 mineral cummingtonite was discovered near the town, which was described by Dewey and named the mineral after its type locality.

Geography

The city is located in the north west of Hampshire County in the foothills of the Berkshires, the Green Mountains. The northern arm of the Westfield River flows through the city.

Economics and History

The city was first established as " Township Number Five " in 1762 and 1779 officially renamed in Cummington. Many of the boiler came from Bridgewater and Abington. The city was ruled by the beginning of a popular assembly, were regulated in both religious as well as political matters. However, it took over 10 years to the still present distribution of power between church and town could be definitively settled.

At the beginning of the 17th century flourished the industry of the city thanks to its location at the Westfield River. By 1830, the population rose to 1200. 1869, the first cattle fair was held in the late 1800s - years for 180 farms in the vicinity of the city. Until the 21st century, however, the number dropped to five farms. The annual cattle fair is held but still.

According to the census in 2000 Cummington has 382 households with 978 residents. The Predominant proportion of the population ( 96.42 %) are white. 27.9 % of residents have an age under 18, 5.7% are between 18 and 24, 30.3% are between 25 and 44, 24.8% are between 45 and 64, and 11.2 % are older than 65 years. The average age is 38 years. The average income per person was $ 21,553. 6.6% of the population were below the poverty line.
