Cuong Nhu

Cuong Nhu is a martial art from Vietnam.

Cuong Nhu ( Vietnamese: Cương nhu karaté - pronounced like Kü'ung Ny'u or Kü -ung Nyoo ) is a synthetic martial art. It was developed in 1965 by Dong Ngo from Vietnam at the University of Hue. He created a system the elements of Shotokan Karate, of Wing Chun, Judo, Aikido, Taijiquan, of boxing, and connects the Vovinam. Over time, elements of Neko -ryu and various weapons were added.

Cuong Nhu is, as much as hard-soft. It combines hard and soft techniques. Students first learn hard techniques, blocking, kick, etc., and later soft techniques.

Cuong Nhu came in 1971 with Ngo from Vietnam to the United States. The headquarters was moved to the USA in 1977, all of the escape route of Ngo and his family following. The first U.S. Dojo was founded at the University of Florida in Gainesville. It soon became 67 dojos, which are mostly found in the USA, but also in other countries around the world.

At present ( 2005) is the senior Grand Master Ngo Quynh.

Simple katas teach the student stands, blocks, punches, kicks. Also, self-defense is part of the teaching program. Cuong Nhu experienced teaches students the use of weapons. They include the long stick Bo, the short stick Tambo, Tonfa, Sai, and spear.
