Cure

Remission means in medicine, the temporary or permanent lessening of symptoms of physical or psychological in nature, but without reaching the recovery. The term is also used in chronic diseases such as rheumatism, or for a favorable outcome of cancers.

The criteria for assessing the degree of remission are disease- dependent and variable. To create a standard is still being worked in many areas.

Application of the concept

  • In clinical applications, the degree of remission generally used for chronic conditions as parameters for success of treatment.
  • In oncology, referred to as tumor remission or reduction.
  • In scientific studies, he presents the so-called endpoints ( objectively ascertainable treatment outcome ) dar. These are set dependent study.

Classification

  • As spontaneous remission is called regularly not expected healing processes that occur without medical exposure.
  • As a complete remission is defined as the state in which (for example, after treatment ) no clinical, radiological or any other signs of the disease over a certain period (eg 6 months) are available.

Oncology

Typical endpoints (see above) in oncological studies are:

  • Complete remission (see above),
  • Partial remission (defined as: " tumor volume decreased by more than 50 %"),
  • Minimal remission ( " tumor volume reduced by 25-50 %"),
  • Stable disease ( " change in volume by less than 25 %"),
  • Progression ( " growth of the tumor by at least 25 %"),
  • Or the death of a patient.
