Curfew

The term refers to the curfew policy or police ordered a ban from the public site as streets or squares. A curfew may thus be referred to as a kind of house arrest.

Curfews are often part of emergency laws and serve the repression of political uprisings and demonstrations. However, they are also expressed to prevent the spread of epidemics, see Quarantine, or imposed by natural disasters to protect against looting.

Some communities have imposed for the prevention of youth crime curfews for young people, about the city Redruth in the UK.

Military Penal Code

The curfew in the Swiss military penal code is a disciplinary measure.

With the curfew, the guilty ones will be banned, the accommodation area designated by the commander to leave except for official purposes. The visit of canteens or similar establishments is prohibited. Inclusion and accommodation in a local detention are not allowed. The curfew may be imposed and carried out only during the salaried military service or during the peace-building service; therefore, a curfew are rarely imposed by the organs of military justice, but as a rule by the commander. The curfew may be disposed of for a period of 3 to a maximum of 15 days. General leave is not affected by the curfew. The execution begins with the legal force of the disciplinary penalty (art. 187 MStG ).

Palestinian Territories

Commander of Israeli army units can arrange curfews for security reasons. They are usually in the course of military operations for the area imposed to prevent protests and escape. The measures announced by loudspeaker vans and always re-enforced with live ammunition. The removal of these barriers is usually completed at the end of the action, but is often not officially announced. However, during the Second Intifada work, extensive curfews, where one can assume collective punishment of the residents.
