Curling at the 2006 Winter Olympics

In the XX. Two competitions 2006 Olympic Games were held in the curling, one for men and one for women. At both tournaments ten curling teams participated. The competitions were held between the 13th and 24th February 2006. Venue was the Palazzo del Ghiaccio Polifunzionale in Pinerolo, 50 kilometers southwest of Turin.

Qualification

For both tournaments, nine of the ten positions were awarded based on a points system that took into account the results of the World Championships of the years 2003, 2004 and 2005. The two Italian curling teams qualify automatically as hosts.

The points system weighted the results of the last three World Championships equally strong. Here, the world champion each received 12 points, and the runners 10, the third-place finisher 8, the fourth-placed 7, the five Placed 6, until the tenth -place, who got a point. Plies one or more teams in the final standings of a World Cup in the same place were distributed the points for these seats evenly on the team. Great Britain received the items on the Scottish national teams that are eligible not independent at the Olympic Games.

Both tournaments were held in two phases. In the first phase, between 13 and 20 February 2006 saw the round-robin system, each team against each of the nine other teams. Three sessions were held each day, one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. The four-point best teams qualified for the semi-finals. In the event of a tie multiple teams tie-breaks were held on 21 February.

The winners of the two semi-final matches in the final of the Olympic champion determined, the two losing semi-finalists the winner of the bronze medal.
