Cursi

Cursi ( in the local dialect: curze ) is a Southeast Italian commune ( comune ) with 4236 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Lecce in Puglia. The municipality is situated approximately 26 km south-southeast of Lecce in southern Salento. Cursi part of Graecia SALENTINA, in the still Griko is spoken.

History

The place name is derived from Cursi Roman centurion Marcus Curtius, who succeeded in this area, which was known in ancient times as Curtium to conquer. Several menhirs already point to a prehistoric settlement.
