Curt Meyer

Curt Meyer ( born November 19, 1919 in Lehe, † 18 April, 2011 Herkenrath ) was a German mathematician who worked on number theory.

He grew up in Bremerhaven, studied from 1937 mathematics, physics and philosophy in Munich and Göttingen and put 1940 at the University of Göttingen his state exam. He did military service in the Navy from 1941 to 1945. Was followed by a stint as an assistant in Berlin, awarded the degree of Dr. rer. nat. at the Humboldt University of Berlin under Helmut Hasse up to 1955 Habilitation at the University of Hamburg with appointment as Assistant Professor. In 1966 he was appointed a full professor of mathematics at the University of Cologne, a post he held until his retirement in 1985.

In his scientific works Curt Meyer treated relationships between arithmetically defined sizes (units, class numbers) and analytical objects ( L- series, modular functions ). His most famous result is the class number formulas abelian body over quadratic fields (see publications). It forms by means of generalized Dedekind sums class invariants real quadratic number fields. After Harold Stark had solved the class number -one problem for imaginary quadratic number fields, Curt Meyer developed a little later its own solution. In later works he studied special body of the fourth degree (for example, as a class body) and created extensive materials to elliptic units.

He had 16 doctoral students.
