Curtilles is a municipality in the district Broye Vully the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Curtilles is located on 516 m above sea level. M., 15 km southwest of the district town Payerne ( straight line ). The former street lines on the eastern edge of the valley village extends the Broye, opposite Lucens along the stream Ruisseau des Vaux, who also appears here in the valley, in the eastern canton of Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​4.9 km ² large municipality area includes a section on the eastern flank of the middle Broye. The sprawling area is in parts bounded on the west by the Broye, ranging in the valley of the Ruisseau des Vaux into it. In the eastern and southeastern part of the community includes the soil to Broye inclined towards the slope of Molassehügellandes between Broye and Glane. At the height at Sarzens is 700 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Curtilles reached; also of the hills La Crétat is 680 m above sea level. M. almost the same. Neighboring communities of Curtilles are Lucens, Seigneux, Dompierre, Sarzens, Chesalles -sur -Moudon and Moudon.

Population

With 295 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Curtilles one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 94.2 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 4.3 % and 0.7 % portugiesischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of Curtilles amounted in 1850 to 428 residents in 1900 to 386 inhabitants. Thereafter, until 1970 due to strong migration, a further decrease to 238 inhabitants recorded; Since then, the population has increased slightly again.

Economy

Curtilles was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding have an important role in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. Near the main road through the Broyetal should in the near future a new industrial zone arise. Curtilles is the site of a horse riding center. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Some employed persons are therefore commuters who work mainly in neighboring Lucens, but also in Moudon.

Traffic

The community is conveniently comparatively quite well developed. It is only a little off the main road from Payerne via Moudon to Lausanne on a side street of Lucens to Romont. Through a postal bus from Moudon about Lucens to Romont, but only 2x morning and evening runs on weekdays, the community is connected to the public transport network. The Lucens station on the railway line Payerne -Moudon lies just 1 km from the center.

History

Curtilles can look back on a long history of settlement. The earliest evidence of human activity in the municipality date from the Bronze Age. In Roman times when this was a farm, and also a milestone of this period is preserved.

The first documentary mention of the place was already in the year 852 under the name Curtilia; 1228 appeared the name Curtilli. The place name derives from the Latin word curtilis in the importance of small courtyard.

Curtilles belonged since its first mention to the possessions of the Bishop of Lausanne and was twice a synod meeting. At the direction of the bishops a castle was built in Curtilles and the village to a small market town, protected by a wall built. In the 11th and 12th centuries Curtilles was therefore the most important place in middle Broyetal. The decline began with a fire in the late 12th century and the rebuilding of the place elsewhere. In the 13th century, the bishop's residence was moved to the Castle of Lucens.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Curtilles came under the administration of the bailiwick Moudon. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the District Moudon.

Attractions

An important cultural monument of Curtilles represents the Reformed saddle Notre-Dame church, was its founding in the 11th century. The present building dates back to the redesign in 1230, while the rectangular choir part was created in the late Gothic style of the 16th century until later. The church contains wall and stained glass windows from the 14th and 15th centuries. The tower is designed as espadaña.

From the former episcopal palace just a hill in the northern part of the village is still preserved. The present castle of Curtilles is a late Gothic stately home, which was built from 1587 to 1589. It is still largely preserved in its original state of construction.
