Curtiss Model R

The Curtiss R-2 was a U.S. military aircraft.

At the beginning of 1915 the prototype of the Curtiss R, the 1935 was redesignated in Model 2 appeared. She was a larger edition of the Curtiss N horizontally with staggered wings of equal span. The test aircraft flew as land and float plane, and the crew was sitting in an elongated cockpit. Unlike the Curtiss N ailerons were arranged between the wings.

In the R-2 wings of unequal span ailerons on the upper wing and a rudder were introduced with horn equalization. In addition, they had separate cockpit for the two crew members with quite a large margin furnished with each other. This R-2 went into production in late 1915 and was delivered in twelve copies to the U.S. Army, but that made very little use of them. A single R-2 was tentatively back wing of the same span in 1916 were two R-2 supplied as float equipment to the U.S. Navy.

The Curtiss R-2 was delivered in late May 1916, the 1st Aero Squadron and used in the war against Mexico. However, the performance of the twelve machines supplied were not satisfactory enough to use them longer at the US -Mexico border.
