Curtiss No. 1

The Curtiss Golden Flyer was a biplane with front-mounted elevator and a fixed tricycle landing gear of a U.S. company called Herring - Curtiss Company. It was a scaled down version of the Curtiss Gold Bug.

The machine is made of bamboo poles. The fuselage and wings were braced with steel wire. When you chose a drive converted to water cooling V8 engine, the Curtiss had previously been used in a motorcycle and a direct drive pusher propeller of 2.13 m diameter. The wings were covered only above and treated with a yellowish varnish, which explained the term gold in the type designation. Between upper and lower surface of the aileron were mounted, which were activated by moving the pilot seat. In the rear there was a horizontal stabilizing surfaces and the rudder, which was operated by a wheel. The elevator was in front and was actuated by forward / back movement of the wheel.

Upon completion in August 1909 the machine from the United States was brought to Reims to attend the Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne air race. On August 28, 1909, Glenn Curtiss a new world speed record for land planes with 76.749 km / h to set up. This happened at the Gordon Bennett Cup.
