Custer County is a county located in the state of Montana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is in Miles City.

According to the census of 2000, there were 11,696 people in the county. There were 4,768 households and 3,089 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.02 % White, 0.09 % African American, 1.27 % Native American, 0.26 % Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.34 % from other races groups; 0.97 % were descended from two or more races. 1.51 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4,768 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.10 % were married couples living together, 10.00 % had a female householder with no husband. 35.20 % were non-families. 29.90 % of all households and 12.30% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.94.
