Custonaci

Custonaci is a city in the province of Trapani in Sicily region of Italy with 5386 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Custonaci located 20 km east of Trapani. The city covers an area of 69 km ². They live mainly from agriculture and the extraction and processing of marble.

The districts are Cornino, S. Lucia and Purgatorio. The neighboring municipalities are Buseto Palizzolo, Castellammare del Golfo, San Vito lo Capo and Valderice.

History

The village was founded in the 18th century by colonization of undeveloped land.

Attractions

The Sanctuary of the Madonna of Custonaci is worth seeing, it was in the 14th century a place of worship. In the 16th century accommodation and fortifications were built around the shrine to visit.

Events

Two events are important for the city: the Feast of Our Lady of Custonaci, which takes place in late August and the Presepe vivente, when the Christmas season before the Grotta Scurati a "living nativity " is displayed. It includes not only the actual Christmas story of the Holy Family with the shepherds, but to the hundreds of people in period costumes make like a Neapolitan crib the whole life of a medieval village with crafts, agriculture and so on dar.
