Cuzance

Cuzance is a southern French village with 568 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Lot in the Midi-Pyrénées region. The community consists of several hamlets ( including the district Rignac ) and farmsteads.

Location

Cuzance located in the north of the Quercy and the department of Lot. Up to the canton capital Martel is about eight kilometers ( route ) to the southeast. The medieval pilgrimage site of Rocamadour is located about 30 kilometers south; the picturesque abbey of Souillac lies just 13 kilometers south-west.

Demographics

In the 19th century Cuzance sometimes had more than 1,200 inhabitants; at the beginning of the 20th century, there were still about 900 agricultural mechanization and the resulting loss of jobs attended in the past for a continuous population decline to the low point in the 1990s.

Economy

Cuzance was and is still dominated by agriculture to a large extent, with the livestock (cattle, pigs, poultry) plays an important role. In autumn, traditionally playing truffles, nuts, chestnuts and fruit (apples, figs, etc. ) play an important role in providing people with food. Since the 1960s, tourism also contributes in the form at the rental of holiday homes and apartments ( gîtes ) to the revenues of the place.

History

The district Rignac formerly belonged to a priory of the abbey of Souillac.

Attractions

  • The Romanesque Church ( Église Saint -Victor ) in the district, with its octagonal lantern tower Rignac dates from the 12th century and was a former priory. The south side of the nave and the chapel Vierungsbereich were extended by additions in the 15th or 16th century. In the 17th or 18th century, the west side of the church was an unadorned cross mounted bell tower. The closed with a wooden flat ceiling nave contains several Romanesque capitals - including one depicting two fischschwänziger sirens. The crossing is covered by a simple design, dome, the center of which is formed by an oculus in the form of a quatrefoil. Choir bay and apse are barrel or rib- vaulted. The church is recognized as a monument historique since 1959.
