In the 29th round, he crashed hard. He himself was seriously injured, his ride-on mechanic and brother Paul Marshall died in the accident. It was not until 1947 he started again in Indianapolis. In an Alfa Romeo with the 8th he succeeded in his best result. In 1950, he failed to qualify for the race itself. Marshall raced the AAA National series exclusively in Indianapolis. His break of 17 years between starts in 1930 and 1947, along with that of Rollie Free on the same period, the longest in the history of the race.
