Cyangugu

Cyangugu is a city in the southwest of Rwanda. The city lies at the southern end of the Kiwusees, right on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about 200 kilometers southeast of the capital, Kigali and has about 59,000 inhabitants. The next largest city is Bukavu in the DRC.

Since the local government reform from 1 January 2006 Cyangugu belongs to the Western Province and is the administrative center of the district of Cyangugu. Western province was formed in 2006 from the merger of the province of Gisenyi, Kibuye province, parts of Ruhengeri and Cyangugu province, whose capital Cyangugu had been until then.
