Features

The moths have a wingspan of about 40 millimeters. The front wings are ivory white and have a bright yellow margin and yellow fringe. In them are two small, distinctive dark spots. The hind wings have yellow fringes, but are otherwise gray.

Occurrence

They come in all of Europe, except in parts of the Iberian Halbindel, east to the Urals before. They live in Au and bog forests, marsh lands and Torfbänken and forest edges with many bushes.

Flight times and caterpillars

The Ivory lichens bear flies in one generation from May to mid-August. The young caterpillars occur from August in appearance, hibernate and can be observed in the following year in May.

Way of life

The caterpillars hatch in August. They overwinter and pupate in May in a slight web between lichens. They eat Erdflechten and liverworts. During the day the caterpillars hide in dry leaves or in the cracks of the bark of oak trees.
