Cychreus (mythology)

Kychreus ( gr Κυχρεύς ) was in Greek mythology the protective hero of Salamis, which was formerly named after him Kychreia. Pausanias describes him as the son of Poseidon and Salamis, the daughter of Asopus. According to Apollodorus and Diodorus Kychreus Salamis freed by a devastating snake; according to other sources, he was even snake diverse and earth-born. Therefore, he became the first permanent residents and king of Salamis. His daughter Glauce he married at Telamon and made ​​this as his successor, because he had no sons. Plutarch tells of a sanctuary on Salamis, where Kychreus was worshiped in snake form as a protective hero; in Athens, he should have been even worshiped as a god.
