Cycling at the 2008 Summer Olympics

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing a total of 18 decisions in cycling took place; eleven at the men and seven for women. Of these, ten were decisions in track cycling, four in road cycling, mountain biking in two and two in the inaugural Olympic Games BMX racing.

Qualification mode

Track Cycling

Each NOK allowed in the individual competitions, with the exception of the points driving, send up to two starters, if they qualified. In the points race and team competitions a starter or team per country was allowed in each case.

Team Sprint, Men

A total of twelve teams were allowed to participate in the team sprint. It qualified the world champion of the Track World Championships 2008 in Birmingham, the winning nation of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup on this track and the ten best of the other teams in the world rankings.

Sprint, Men

A total of 18 participants were allowed to go to the start in the men's sprint. These were the 2008 world champion, the winner of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup, the winner of the B World Cup 2007 in Cape Town, the top five in the world rankings as well as one additional driver of all teams that had qualified for the Team Sprint.

Keirin, Men

A total of 18 participants were allowed to go to the start in the men's keirin. These were the 2008 world champion, the winner of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup, the winner of the B World Cup 2007 in Cape Town, the top eight in the world rankings as well as one additional driver of all teams that had qualified for the Team Sprint.

Team Pursuit, Men

It qualified the 2008 World Champion, the winning nation of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup as well as the best of the eight remaining teams in the world rankings.

Individual pursuit, men

Qualifies were the 2008 world champion, the winner of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup, the winner of the B- WC 2007, the top five of the remaining riders in the world rankings and another driver all qualified for the team competition teams.

Madison, Men

It qualified the 2008 world champion, the winner of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup, as well as the twelve best two in the world rankings, with only one team was allowed per nation.

Points race, men

Qualifies were the 2008 world champion, the winner of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup, the winner of the B World Cup, the best of the remaining nine drivers in the world rankings and, if not already qualified in each case a driver of all qualified teams in two squad driving.

Sprint, Women

It qualified the 2008 World Champion, the UCI Track Cycling World Cup winner, the winner of the B- World Cup 2007 as well as nine other athletes on the world rankings.

Individual pursuit, women

It qualified the 2008 World Champion, the UCI Track Cycling World Cup winner, the winner of the B- World Cup 2007 as well as nine other athletes on the world rankings.

It qualified the 2008 World Champion, the UCI Track Cycling World Cup winner, the winner of the B- WC 2007, eight more athletes on the world rankings and a maximum of nine of the twelve participants in the individual pursuit.

Road cycling

Road, Men

The individual associations have won quota places through various UCI rankings. The top ten nations of the UCI ProTour - ranking in 2007, five participants were allowed to send to the start, the nations in the stands 10-14 four. Each three starters were the best-placed NOK provide the Africa, Asia and Oceania Tour, the best three of the American tour and the best six of the European tour of all not on the UCI ranking qualified organizations. Two starting points were awarded to the second best of the Africa Association Tour and the nations on the sidelines of the Asia Tour 2-4, 4-6 and 7-16 of the American tour of the European Tour. All other associations which had at least one rider in the Pro Tour rankings or among the top 200 of the Europe ranking, 20 of the America ranking or 5 of the Africa, Asia or Oceania ranking, were allowed with a driver at the Olympic mass start race go to the starting line. There were also the top five of the B- World Cup 2007, who had moved out a personal right to start for himself, so that the starting field in the road race of men could be large 130-160 driver.

Road Race, Women

The top 16 nations of the UCI World Ranking were allowed to send three participants in the Olympic mass start race at the start, the nations in the stands 17-24 whose two and every association that had at least one driver in the top 100 of the singles world rankings, was allowed to nominate one participant. In addition, the top three of the B- World Cup came in 2007, so that the final starting field between 70 and 90 athletes, respectively.

Time Trial, Men

A maximum of two drivers of NOK allowed to participate in the time trials of the men, where at least one occupied a place among the top 15 in the time trial at the World Championships in Stuttgart. It is qualified with the best 15 riders of the World Championship World Cup, which got a personal right to start. Furthermore, could send the Africa and Ozeanienrangliste each a rider at the start the top ten nations of the UCI Protourrangliste, the best seven of the European ranking, the top four of America rankings, the best two of the Asia ranking and the respective best NOK, so that the final participants in the time trial of the men was 40 athletes.

Time Trial, Women

A maximum of two riders of NOK were allowed to participate in the time trials of women, provided that at least one had occupied a place among the top ten in the time trial at the World Championships in Stuttgart. Qualifies were the best 10 of the world championship, which got a personal right to start, and one each driver of the 15 best nations in the UCI World Ranking, so that the final field of competitors in the time trial of the women was 25 athletes.

Mountain bike

The best five NOCs to the UCI World Ranking December 31, 2007 were allowed to send three participants at the start, the NOCs in the stands 6 to 13 whose two and the NOCs in the stands 14 to 24 of each. Added to this were the two best participant who does not have the world ranking qualified teams of Africa, America, Asia and Ozeanienmeisterschaften so that the starter box could be a maximum of 51 athletes.

The NOCs to the ranks 1 to 8 of the UCI World Ranking were each send two gymnasts to Beijing, the one in the stands 9 to 18, respectively. In addition, the winners of the Africa, America, Asia and Ozeanienmeisterschaften 2007, so the starting field could be a maximum of 29 athletes.

BMX racing

The best five NOCs in the world rankings from 31 May 2008 were each send three starters to Beijing in 2008, the NOCs on ranks 6-8 and the two in the stands 9 to 11 of each. Added to this were the best of all six not on the world rankings qualified drivers the World Cup 2008 ( maximum of one driver per NOC ) and two starting positions that were awarded by wildcard, so that the field of riders was 32 starters.

Women

The top four NOCs in the world rankings from May 31, 2008 were allowed to each send two riders to Beijing and the NOCs in the stands five to eight one. Added to this were the best of all three remaining riders at the 2008 World Cup and a starting place, which were awarded by wildcard, so that the starting field was 16 riders.

At the start were 143 athletes, of which only about half finished the race. Of the five German participants had four drivers, Gerald Ciolek, Stefan Schumacher, who was previously still considered the gold hope, Jens Voigt and Bert grave robbers, to quit the race, was the fifth German Fabian Wegmann at the end of two and a half minutes behind the winner and was 21 For the Swiss, the only participant Fabian Cancellara could win the bronze medal, the two Austrian Christian Pfannberger and Thomas Egger tube could not be placed in the top 20. Also, the German Stefan Schumacher tested positive. On 17 November 2009 Rebellin was stripped of the silver medal officially and Schumacher was deleted from the list of results.

For the favorites win and the first Swiss gold medal of these Games saw the double world time trial champion Fabian Cancellara. Having already brought a bronze medal in the road race, he fulfilled in the time trial expectations in him and distanced especially in the last kilometers his opponents clearly. It was attended by 23 riders participate in the competition, two of which did not reach the target. Long the German Roger Kluge led the points standings, after he had lapped the field twice and get forty points for it. However, he was in between Spain Joan Llaneras and the British Chris Newton overtaken by 2000 from the Olympic champion about 30 laps to go through another round standings. After 160 laps and 40 kilometers then drove but Kluge as the finish line first, thus securing another five points and finished in second place. Llaneras brought by Samuel Sánchez in the road race the second gold medal of these games for Spain, both in cycling.

It was attended by 66 athletes in the contest, three of which the goal is not reached. The course took the same route as for men. After the flat course of 78.8 kilometers, but only two laps were driven á 23.8 km. The total distance was thus 126.4 km. The Swiss Nicole Brändli finished in 18th place. The Germans Trixi Worrack, Kupfernagel, Judith Arndt took places 20, 39 and 41 The Austrian Monika Schachl was ranked 46th

Among the 25 participants were also two German gymnasts. Judith Arndt placed in sixth out a proper competition and missed only nine seconds, the bronze medal. World time trial champion Hanka copper nail disappointed and placed itself surprising as Eleventh not even in the top ten. For the Swiss, Karin Thürig cared for the second bronze medal after the third place Fabian Cancellara in the road race.
