Cylindropuntia bigelovii

Cylindropuntia bigelovii is a species of the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The specific epithet honors the American physician and botanist John Milton Bigelow. Foreign language common names are " Cholla ", " Chollo de Oso ", " Golden Spined Jumping Cholla ", " Guerra ", " Teddy Bear Cactus", "Teddy Bear Cholla " and " Vellas de Coyote ".

Description

Cylindropuntia bigelovii growing shrubby or tree-like branched with open crowns and reaches stature heights of up to 2 meters. The branches are arranged at an acute angle. On the greenish purple to purple, 4-18 cm long and 1-2 inches in diameter measured drive sections are protruding, extended hump. The slightly rounded tan to greyish brown areoles in old age and carry up to 1 millimeter long dark yellow glochids. Six to eight spines are present over the entire length of the drive portions. They are usually interlocked, spreading to spread, yellow to golden yellow and later brown. The spikes are 1 to 1.8 inches long. Their sheaths are white to cream-colored.

The flowers are yellowish-green, yellow, golden yellow, bronze, red, pink or magenta. The yellowish-green or reddish fruits are leathery - fleshy and not spined. They are 2.5 to 4 cm in length and capable diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters. The fruits have initially protruding bumps that disappear later. The fruits can proliferate.

Systematics and distribution

Cylindropuntia bigelovii is common in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico in the vegetation of the Mojave and Sonoran desert.

The first description as Opuntia bigelovii by George Engelmann was published in 1856. Frederik Marcus Knuth introduced the type 1930 in the genus Cylindropuntia. We distinguish the following varieties:
