Cymatics

The term cymatics was coined by the Swiss naturalist Hans Jenny for the visualization of sounds and waves. The word is derived from the ancient Greek for κῦμα shaft. In English, the term Cymatics has naturalized.

Based on work of Galileo Galilei, Robert Hooke and Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni especially Jenny developed by systematically varying the parameters of the technique for imaging of sounds further.

The simplest method is to provide a disk (eg, glass or metal screen) to evenly sprinkle and to put through to paint a violin bow to vibrate with a fine powder (eg soot or pollen). Today, speakers are used and by clever lighting and use of video technology also vibrations in liquids can be visualized.
