History

On the Isle of Man due to a genetic defect, a population tailless cats was (today Manx cat ) from the domestic cat. Due to the closed gene pool of the island, the race could establish. The existing also in this population gene for long hair brought time and again long-haired offspring, but which were discarded as mutations. Only when such offspring were born in Canada in the 1960s, it tried to establish a breed, the local cat breeders. While the Manx was already recognized in the 1920s as a breed, the long-haired variant has been recognized only in the 1960s with the initiative from Canada. The Cymric enjoyed until the mid-1970s, growing in popularity.

Health

The gene for tailless is afflicted with a lethal factor. Homozygous tailless individuals still die in the womb. As this occurs in 25% of offspring who throws the Cymric are rather small. The gene also provides for so-called " Manx Syndrome ", from the spina bifida ( open spine ), gaps in the backbone, coalesced dorsal vertebrae or bowel and bladder problems may arise. And the passage of some lolloping Cymric or Manx is attributed to the deformation of the backbone.

Not every Cymric suffers from the Manx Syndrome. It is produced by the Manx gene and can not be cured if it occurs. The problems are however usually visible within the first six months of life, which is why some buyers are waiting precaution so long with the purchase.
