Cynthia Maung

Cynthia Maung ( born December 6, 1959 in Mawlamyaing, Myanmar ) is a doctorate in medical examiner from the Karen people and founder of the Mae Tao Clinic in Mae Sot, Thailand.

Life

Cynthia Maung was educated at the University of Rangoon and worked in several hospitals in the area of the former capital of Myanmar, including the North Okkalapa General Hospital.

After the bloody riots on August 8, 1988, she fled to the Thai border. In February 1989, the construction of a small hospital began to treat refugees from Myanmar in Mae Sot Mae Tao 's suburb. Today, the Mae Tao clinic treats up to 100,000 patients per year. From the wooden hut of the period of a small settlement was established. It employs more than one hundred employees in the clinic, which is funded purely by donations.

Work

Dr. Cynthia Maung is often referred to as the Mother Teresa of Burma. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and has received several prestigious awards, including the 2002 Ramon Magsaysay Award, and the Jonathan Mann Award for her work. 2003 Time Magazine Asia honored as a hero of the year.

It is engaged in the training of medical staff. At her clinic, there are regular one-year medical courses. The trainees often return after their training back to Myanmar, to help you at the clinic, or work for the Back Pack Health Worker Team in Mae Sot, a charity organization that offers medical assistance in Myanmar Kayin State, Kayah and Mon, areas in which a governmental health care simply does not exist.

On a return to Myanmar Cynthia Maung can not think. Classified as a sympathizer of the Karen National Union by the military regime and have to reckon with a return to persecution.
