Cypriot legislative election, 2006

The parliamentary elections in Cyprus in 2006 to the House of Representatives was held on 21 May 2006. The turnout was 87.91 %. The participation has traditionally been high, since voting is compulsory.

Results

The Communist Anorthotiko comma Ergazomenou Laou ( reconstruction Party of the Working People, AKEL ) received 31.1 percent. It suffered heavy losses, but remained the strongest force. The conservative Dimokratikos Synagermos (Democratic collection, Democratic Rally ) was 30.4% with the second strongest, but also lost votes. The Social Democratic Party Kinima Sosialdimokraton (Movement of Social Democrats EDEK ) received 8.9% and recorded an increase in votes. The centrist Evropaiko comma ( European party, Evroko ) received 5.7 percent. The green Kinima Oikologon Perivallontiston (ecology and environmental movement, LD ) was 1.9 percent.

The largest gain votes learned the bourgeois- liberal oriented Dimokratiko comma ( Democratic Party, DIKO ) with 17.9 % of the vote (2001: 14.8%). The party presented since 2000 the President Tassos Papadopoulos. The coalition is one of the forces opposed to reunification with the Turkish part of Cyprus skeptical. Tassos Papadopoulos had called in the referendum of 2004 against reunification.
