Cyril of Jerusalem

St. Cyril of Jerusalem, also Cyril (* 313 probably in Jerusalem or environment; † March 18 386 in Jerusalem ) was a Church Father of Orthodoxy and a Doctor of the Church the Catholic Church.

Life

As the son of Christian parents Cyril was ordained a priest by St. Macarius, according to Jerome I., his predecessor in the Episcopal service and enjoyed as a preacher and lecturer in Jerusalem a high reputation, which is why he was appointed 350 after the death of Makarios to the Patriarch of Jerusalem. He was involved in the bitter clashes between the Roman Catholic church hierarchy and Arianism. Bishop Acacius of Caesarea Maritima accused him, apparently so that he spent 16 years in exile because of an unexplained at the Council of Nicea rank question, the illicit sale of church lands in support of the faithful.

Cyril, the Bishop of Jerusalem, describes its work as a liturgist and preacher Egeria in her travelogue.

Works

24 Catechesis - Lectures on the Christian teaching of Taufanwärtern - from his pen have been preserved to us. Its main theme is the creed, on whose contents he arrives exactly. Are invaluable in these Mystagogical catechesis the descriptions and theological interpretations of baptism.
