Cyrus Griffin

Cyrus Griffin ( * July 16, 1749 in Farnham, Richmond County, Virginia; † December 14, 1810 in Yorktown, Virginia ) was an American politician and the tenth president of the Continental Congress of the Confederation. He had held the post of 22 January 1788 to 2 November 1788 before it was abolished.

Griffin arrived in Virginia to the world, but was educated in England and studied at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. While he was staying there, he married the daughter of a Scottish nobleman.

After returning to America, Griffin embarked on a political career. From 1777 to 1778 he was a member of the House of Delegates of Virginia, a second time from 1786 to 1787. Member of the Continental Congress, he was from 1778 to 1780 and from 1787 to 1788 this year., He joined the succession of Arthur St. Clair as President to the Congress under the Articles of Confederation.

Cyrus Griffin was president of the Supreme Court of the Admiralty from its inception until its abolition. In 1789 he was appointed Commissioner for the Creek Indians. In the same year he took over the post of judge at the Federal District Court for the District of Virginia, which he held until his death. He was buried in Williamsburg on the side of his wife.
