Cysteine lactose electrolyte deficient agar

CLED Agar ( Cystine Lactose Electrolyte Deficient Agar) is used in microbiology as a universal medium for microorganisms. The nutrient-rich and low electrolyte medium is mainly used for cultivation of bacteria from the urine.

Due to the absence of electrolyte, the swarming of Proteus is prevented. Lactose -fermenting bacteria form the basis of the indicator bromothymol blue a yellow colony, on the other hand not lactose -fermenting bacteria form blue colonies.
