The DIAĽNICA D2 is the second longest highway in Slovakia and is located in the extreme west of the country. It is part of the European road E 65, E 75 and in full-length part of the Pan-European Corridor IV (Berlin / Nuremberg - Prague - Bratislava - Budapest - Constanta / Thessaloniki / Istanbul). Its length is 80 km.

History

The first plans for the construction of the D2 highway appeared in the 1960s. 1963, the Czech government decided to build a 117 km long motorway section between Brno and Bratislava, of which 58.4 km are in today's Slovakia. Construction began in April 1969, the first 29.3 km section between Bratislava and Malacky was opened on 7 November 1973. At the same time this was for the first portion of the highway is now Slovakia. 1974, work began on the Czech side in Brno, the highway was from 8 November 1980 continuous section and set forth the connection to the Czech D1 to Prague. Thus, the main route between the two capitals of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic was ready.

Between 1985 and 1991, the Lafranconi Bridge over the Danube was built. 1987 was added to the plan, the portion to the Hungarian border. In the newly independent Slovakia, the other construction started in 1996 and in February 1998 the section of the Hungarian border was opened, some with only two tracks. Since 2002, this section is complete with four lanes. With the start of the last section of 3 km in length with the 1440 m long Sitina tunnel in Bratislava on 24 June 2007, the D2 motorway is completed.

On 1 June 2011, the toll freedom was extended to the D2 to Jarovce where it intersects with the D4. In the extension to the Hungarian border, the mandatory toll remains as well as those on the short piece of the D4 are made to the Austrian border, where on this route no Vignettes can be purchased since the abolition of border controls.

Future

The operator NDS as to take full dissemination of the section from the Czech border to the junction Bratislava Polianky on a six-lane highway, some with collector roadways, in a total length of 58.2 km. With version is expected in the late 2010s.

In Moravian Svätý Ján (km 13.7 ) is also (80 m length) prepared the establishment of a green bridge, which is also necessary for the Alpine - Carpathian Corridor .. They will be built in 2014 and its planned six-lane highway needs.
