DAF Daffodil

DAF 30

The DAF 30 - also known as Daffodil - was a Dutch small car manufacturer DAF and one of the first cars with standard automatic transmission " variator ".

History

The DAF 30 was released in 1961 along with the somewhat less luxurious DAF 750 Both were up on radiator and equipment identical. They were improved versions of the first DAF 1959 DAF 600, which had an even smaller ³ engine with only 590 cm, but the it still gave as an entry-level model.

As a revision of the 600/750/30-Reihe 1963, designed by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti DAF 31 came on the market, there were now in the models, the " Standaard ", " Luxe " and " Luxe Extra". 1965 then came the last Daffodil, DAF 32 - again as " Standaard ", " Luxe " and " Luxe Extra". The Daffodil Series 1966/1967 was replaced by the subcompact DAF 33, DAF 44 and DAF were added 55, which now had different bodies and engines.

The DAF 30 has an air-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine with 22 kW / 30 PS, via a centrifugal clutch and V-belt automatic VARIOmatic (see below ) drive the rear wheels. The heavy VARIOmatic was installed on the rear axle under the back seat. On the engine sat after the centrifugal clutch and the 1-1 reverse gear, through which you can drive backwards as fast as forwards with the Daffodil. The Daffodil has no differential. When cornering, it is therefore a squeaking by the slippage of the belt of VARIOmatic. Since the wedge discs by vacuum and centrifugal force to be adjusted, both rear wheels at the same speed.

The two-door body, the then modern tail fins. Daffodile place among the most sought-after classic cars.

VARIOmatic

Two controlled in their distance from the conical disk pairs at the output of the rear axle permit by varying the effective diameter of the pulleys of the specific alteration of the ratios. Such a gear type shows the need getting used to " rubber band effect ", in which the engine always has same speed in the range of maximum torque, the vehicle accelerated ( at the same time, the speed range with specific minimum fuel consumption ) to the speed with which have reached the end position, the conical disks. From then on, the engine revs up.
