Dolchnasenhai ( Isogomphodon oxyrhyncus )

The Dolchnasenhai ( Isogomphodon oxyrhyncus ) is the only known member of the genus Isogomphodon within the requiem sharks ( Carcharhinidae ).

Appearance and characteristics

The Dolchnasenhai is characterized by its long and pointed snout and the solid consisting of slender and sharp teeth bite. These have in the upper and in the lower jaw the same shape and are equipped with up to 60 teeth much more numerous than all other representatives of the requiem sharks. The cutting edges are finely serrated. He is uniformly gray with a lighter underside and reaches a maximum size of about 1.50 meters.

Way of life

The Dolchnasenhai specializes in the capture of small schooling fish. His teeth form a catch Reuse, which can be optimally used for packing these prey. The young are born alive and are about 40 inches long at birth.

Dissemination

Widespread is the Dolchnasenhai in the tropical waters of the western Atlantic between Trinidad and Guinea and off the coast of northern Brazil.
